What is a “tuneS & BACKUPS workshop”?
You’ll hear a traditional tune played for you then, phrase-by-phrase, put that tune together with guidance, repetition, and instruction from Daniel. Once the melody is well-enough in hand, the conversation will shift to chords, harmony, accompaniment, and arranging. We’ll jam the tune together over a backing track!
Participants will come away with a new tune melody in their repertoire, and a fully-realized accompaniment part for that tune.
You’ll be ready to jam on that tune, next time you’re sitting down with someone else who also knows it too… be that a cellist, a fiddler… or a player of mandolin, guitar, pipes, flute, etc etc etc…
What if I’ve never learned by ear?
Join us! This is an amazing experience - to learn a piece of music with no “dots"… The mental construct is rich AND flexible, allowing for greater access to active listening, improvisation, and fun. You’ll test your memory and strengthen your musicianship in ways you never thought possible. PLUS the workshop will address strategies for successfully building your mental map of the tune. See you there!
‘Groove Cello’ vs ‘Creative Cello’
Groove cello - the stuff we train for in the Academy - is a subset of what we’ve all come to call “creative cello.” In groove cello, we’re playing in the rhythm section - harmony & chords, rhythm & percussion, arranging, accompanying, jamming. We’re building texture and structure around the tune. And yes, occasionally taking a solo.
